GAME OF GROANS: How to Level Up While Everything Is Trying to Kill Your Creativity
The boss battle isn’t optional—but you’ve got cheat codes.
Yoooo, Life is like a video game, but instead of a fire ass sword or a dragon to fight, you get taxes, deadlines, and imposter syndrome that hits like a final boss with three health bars. Aint nothing fun about that.
The thing is… no matter what you do, it's hard. Starting a business? Hard. Staying in a soul-sucking 9-to-5? Also hard. Trying to go viral on any platform while holding onto your sanity? Yeah, that's hard too(Don’t try to go viral just do your own thang). The truth is, you're not going to escape the grind, but you can decide which grind is worth your time.
Speaking of grinding through new levels...
I just recently moved to Seattle, and this in itself feels like a new level in a video game. Having to figure out where everything is, get my footing, build furniture (Its so many pieces to everything!), get used to new routines—and I think that's what makes life...fun.
There's this sense of curiosity when exploring a new level, knowing if you can just survive long enough, you can become the boss of your own life. You collect those small power-ups along the way like new friends, new outdoor adventures, and yes, even new office space. First week in Seattle and we already have a new office, it feels like an alignment of the stars, all while being scary, exciting, hopeful... all of the above.
That's the thing about new levels—they're designed to challenge you, but also reward you for being brave enough to play.
If you're like most creators or entrepreneurs, you're probably stuck somewhere between "I want to build my dream life" and "I'm ready to yeet my laptop into the void." That's normal. But here's the good news: every game has cheat codes. You just need to find yours.
Today, let's talk about how to stop fighting the wrong battles and start playing the game like a boss:
How to stop running out of creative health potions
Why failure is just a plot twist, not game over
The secret power-ups you're ignoring
Let's roll.
3 Ways to "Choose Your Hard" (And Laugh a Little While You're at It) Life's too short to take it too seriously. Here's how to embrace the chaos and come out on top.
1. Stop Rage-Quitting When Your Creative Energy Bar Hits Zero Imagine going into a boss fight with zero health, no potions, and only a rusty spoon. That's what it's like when you burn yourself out. You're not proving anything by working until your brain feels like scrambled eggs. Rest is a weapon, use it fam.
Pro Tip: Block off time for naps, walks, or staring into space like a wise philosopher. Reserve your energy for the battles that actually matter, like creating your next masterpiece or answering emails without screaming.
2. Side Quests Are Where The Best Loot Hides You know those random side quests in games where you have to collect mushrooms for a villager? Turns out, life is full of those. Your "mushroom quest" might be a project that flops or an opportunity that feels random, but it's all part of leveling up.
Pro Tip: Embrace the weird. Every misstep teaches you something, even if it's just "never work with that client again." Side quests aren't detours, they're XP for the main mission.
3. When Life Glitches, Save Your Game And Reload Ever played a game where your character randomly gets stuck in a wall? That's life(This used to happen to me all the time in Madden lol). Glitches happen—bad days, weird vibes, that time your internet dies right before a big Zoom call. You can rage-quit, or you can laugh and keep playing.
Pro Tip: When life glitches, take a screenshot (or a mental one). That moment might just become the opening joke of your TED Talk someday.
Here's what you've learned today:
Rest is a weapon—don't try to fight the boss battle with 1 HP.
Failure isn't game over—it's just an unexpected side quest.
Humor is your cheat code—use it to glitch-proof your journey.
Life's hard, but you've got what it takes to win. Take breaks, take risks, and don't forget to laugh at the absurdity of it all. And when in doubt? Just press "continue."
